The Helen Reeves Turner, MD, PhD Scholarship Award
The Helen Reeves Turner, MD, PhD Scholarship Award was established in 2013 and is awarded each year to a deserving student from one of the University of Mississippi Medical Center Schools.
The award is named for Dr. Helen R. Turner. In 2003, she became the first Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at UMMC. Dr. Turner earned a PhD in medical microbiology in 1975 and finished her medical degree in 1979 at UMMC, where she also completed her residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in infectious diseases. She later became the first woman to serve as Associate Chief of Staff for Education and Chief of Medicine at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jackson.
Dr. Turner also served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at UMMC and as President of the Mississippi State Medical Association. As a faculty member at UMMC, she received recognition for teaching excellence, being named Alpha Omega Alpha Teacher of the Year to two years. She was also recognized for clinical excellence and was named to "Best Doctors in the Southeast Region" and "Best Doctors in America" for several years.
The recipient of this award, selected by the dean or their designee, exemplifies Dr. Turner’s outstanding attributes of leadership, education, and service. Award recipients are announced at their schools' annual honors and awards ceremonies and receive a printed certificate and $1,500.00 scholarship.
The 2024 Helen Reeves Turner, MD, PhD Scholarship Award recipient is McKing Amedari, a doctor of philosophy in population health science student in the John D. Bower School of Population Health.
